Purpose of the Position

To provide leadership and supervision of the day-to-day operations of the recreation center.

General Description

The Recreation Center Manager at Southwest Sports & Fitness Alliance (SSFA) will oversee the daily operations, programming, and community engagement efforts at the Poppleton Recreation Center in Southwest Baltimore. This role is instrumental in advancing SSFA’s mission to promote health, wellness, and active lifestyles through sports, fitness, and community-based programming. The ideal candidate will be a passionate leader who fosters a safe, inclusive, and vibrant recreational environment for youth, families, and community members.

Essential Duties

  • Facility Operations & Management
    • Plans and oversees the daily operations of the recreation center, ensuring a safe, clean, and welcoming environment.
    • Manage facility maintenance, scheduling, and equipment upkeep to support various programs and activities.
    • Maintains cleanliness of interior and exterior appearance of the center.
    • Enforce safety regulations, policies, and procedures, ensuring compliance with local and state guidelines.
    • Develop and manage the recreation center’s budget, including program fees, sponsorships, and expense tracking.
    • Provides administrative support including data processing, filing, completing facility forms, making phone calls as directed.
    • Provide facility tours.
    • Answers a multi-line phone and directs calls to the appropriate coordinator; monitors an assigned email account.
    • Reports accidents, injuries, incidences and property loss/damage.
    • Maintains control of center patrons and enforces center rules.
    • May be involved in handling emergency situations (i.e. protest, staff/contractor no shows, customer accident/incident, inclement weather).
    • Maintains traffic flow within the facility including exit monitoring and member access.
    • Provide set up for rentals and community events.
    • Performs other duties as needed to ensure the smooth operations of the center.
  • Program Development & Implementation
    • Design, implement, and oversee a variety of sports, fitness, and wellness programs that align with SSFA’s mission.
    • Collaborate with local schools, organizations, and community groups to develop impactful programming for all ages.
    • Evaluate programs and participant engagement to ensure continuous improvement and growth.
    • Provides marketing and program promotion to all customers.
    • Communicates clearly and courteously with internal and external customers.
  • Staff Supervision & Leadership
    • Recruit, train, support and manage a team of staff, coaches, volunteers, and program coordinators.
    • Foster a positive and energetic work culture that encourages teamwork, professional growth, and innovation.
    • Conduct performance evaluations and provide ongoing mentorship and training opportunities.
    • Coordinates set up and take down of equipment and monitors the proper use of the equipment.
    • Ability to serve as tournament, league and event staff and occasional substitute as class instructor as needed.
  • Community Engagement & Partnerships
    • Serve as a key liaison between SSFA and the Southwest Baltimore community, building strong relationships with local stakeholders.
    • Promote SSFA programs and events through community outreach, social media, and strategic marketing efforts.
    • Develop and manage partnerships with local businesses, schools, and health organizations to enhance SSFA’s impact.
    • Sets a positive example for fellow contingent staff, provides leadership, and shares knowledge.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Recreation Management, Sports Administration, Community Development, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in recreation, facility management, or community programming.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills, with a passion for community engagement.
  • Experience in budget management, grant writing, and revenue development.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations and develop inclusive programming.
  • Proficiency in recreation management software and Microsoft Office. Familiarity with Afterschool HQ online registration system is a plus.
  • CPR, First Aid, and AED certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed.
  • Read and follow written and oral directions.
  • Possesses good communication and organizational skills.
  • Able to work independently and under pressure.
  • Enjoys working and able to maintain effective relationships with the public.
  • Ability to communicate with public safety officials in emergency and non-emergency situations, communicate with SSFA leadership, complete detailed reports, and manage numerous activities within a facility.

Educational Requirements, Special Skills, Credentials, or Licenses Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Recreation Management, Sports Administration, Community Development, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in recreation, facility management, or community programming.
  • Prefer a college degree or three years of commensurate experience.
  • Prefer someone with First Aid/CPR/AED certification.

Purpose of the Position

Under supervision facilitates and leads recreation activities in the Center for local residents.

General Description

The Recreational Leader is responsible for planning, organizing, and leading recreational activities and programs that promote physical fitness, social engagement, and community involvement. This role involves working with individuals of all ages and backgrounds to create a safe, inclusive, and enjoyable environment.

  • Welcome visitors and participants and answer questions.
  • Plan and organize recreational activities for groups of all ages.
  • Teach the skills, rules, and regulations of a wide variety of sports, games and recreational activities.
  • Explain and demonstrate proper use and care of recreational equipment.
  • Maintain records.
  • Monitor members, participants, guests and facility users.

  • Ability to plan and organize a recreational activity.
  • Ability to work effectively with large, diverse groups of people including youth, adults, and seniors.
  • Ability to maintain discipline and order.
  • Ability to document and maintain notes and records related to equipment and activities.
  • Basic computer skills – including Word, Excel, and database programs.
  • High school diploma or equivalent (Bachelor’s degree in recreation, sports management, or a related field preferred).
  • Previous experience in recreation, coaching, youth programs, or community engagement.

Work Environment:

  • Indoor and outdoor settings, including gyms, parks, and community centers.
  • Exposure to various weather conditions during outdoor activities.

Parking is available at the Recreation Center. All locations are located on public transportation routes. SSFA conducts activities outside the recreation center and runs several special events. You may be scheduled to be present. You may be asked to travel offsite for events.

Educational Requirements, Special Skills, Credentials, or Licenses Required

EDUCATION: Have graduated from an accredited high school or possess a GED certification.

EQUIVALENCIES: Six (6) months of additional experience in leading recreational activities may be substituted for each year of the high school requirement.
A bachelor’s degree in recreation, physical education or a related field from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the experience requirement.
